| “My god,” he muttered under his breath. He immediately pushed the elevator button taking him to the third floor where Tracy’s office was located. By the time he got there, Tracy was coming out the door.
“Well, hello, stranger. This is a nice surprise. I have been
thinking about you.” She smiled her brilliant smile and kissed him lightly on his lips.
“We have to talk,” said Tyler taking her by her arm and pushing her back into her office. “What in the world were you thinking?”
“What’s wrong with you? I don’t know what you are talking about.”
The expression on her face told him that she did. “You plagiarized THEN THERE WAS LIGHT. I read the synopsis, so don’t deny
it.”
“Now, listen, Tyler…”
“No, you listen. You can’t do this. You have to tell Sheldon you have changed your mind. Tell him you aren’t ready to get it published yet. I don’t give a shit what you tell him, you just get it off the list.”
Tracy sat down in her desk chair and leaned back. “I won’t do that.”
“What do you mean, ‘you won’t do
that?'" “Listen, Tyler. Sheldon is giving me a $50,000 advance with a guarantee of 500,000 copies in the first run. Do you know what that means? This book will be huge. It will certainly be the biggest thing they have had around here lately. And that means I’ll be able to get my own imprint, my own authors, whatever I want. Don’t you see?”
Tyler was stunned. Of all the things to happen, being involved in helping the competition plagiarize
someone else’s work wasn’t what he wanted. “I won’t let you do it.” |
